San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf
daniel says 16 years ago
As someone who prides himself on knowing exactly where to go, or more importantly, where to not go when travelling, I recently discovered something in san Francisco that caught me a little bit off-guard. I've been to this great city many times over the years for business or for quick weekend getaways and have explored nearly every neighborhood, eaten at some of the best restaurants and checked out all the major museums. Or so I thought. On a recent trip to Frisco (the locals prefer you don't call it that!), I was talked into a jaunt to Fisherman's Wharf by my companion who wanted to watch the barking sea lions. I reluctantly agreed and honestly had one of the best experiences I've had in a long time. In addition to the sea lions, an attraction that I'll call a must for anyone visiting San francisco, there's a handful of truly incredible museums. Though not on par with SFMOMA or The de Young Museums, The Ripley's Believe it or not and The Wax Museum are both quite interesting and fun (especially if you're with kids!). As a WWII buff, I was blown away by the USS Pampanito, a real submarine converted into a museum and memorial. As a WWII buff I was blown away and frankly a bit disappointed that I'd never really known about it. Also: A place called The Musee Mecanique on Pier 45 is a must-see. This unique collection of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines was a such a blast! I'll never go back to Frisco without visiting that place. We had dinner at Scomas, which I'd heard about but never been. Possible the best cioppino I've ever had! And then a cable car ride back to my hotel in Union Square. What a great day! Even more importantly though, I learned something...just because a place is popular with tourists, doesn't mean it's not worth a visit. Next stop, Times Square. Or, maybe not...

I whole heartedly agree!

I too have been to Frisco many times and have found so much enjoyment in just trapesing around the wharf, taking in the sights and really experiencing the flavor of this great neighborhood. I can honestly say Fisherman’s Wharf is the perfect thing to do in San Francisco. Great restaurants, cafes, and bars…There’s street performers, cable cars, souvenir shops and some of the coolest, most unique museums I’ve ever seen. Also, the sea lions at Pier 39 alone are worth the trip. At no cost at all you could watch hundreds of them laze about on the docks barking and preening as tourists stand nearby, taking photos and just enjoying the scene. The Wharf is such a relaxing place to stroll around, eat, and take in the sights and is also an excellent base considering the proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, the Ferry Building, North Beach, the Cannery and more. And I totally agree, The Musee Mecanique on Pier 45 is a must-see!

It's true, SF's Fisherman's Wharf rocks!

Though I've lived in San Francisco for years, I rarely make it down to the wharf, Ghiradelli square or the like. But recently, showing some friends around town, I thought it would be a necessary (and fun?) thing to do, experiencing some of the sights and attractions that I've always assumed would be, uh...touristy I guess for locals like myself. I have to admit, I had more fun than I've had in a really long time. First off, the wax museum is a blast! I recommend it to anyone, tourist or not. Also, the Museum Mechanique was awesome, with displays and games and things that I've never seen. We even got the clam chowder in a bread bowl which, although a bit cliche, was pretty tasty. The whole experience reminded me of why visitors tend to flock to the wharf and more importantly, why I love this city so much.
