Vrlika Travel Guide

Vrlika is home to 1334 inhabitants at an elevation of 441 meters above sea-level. It is located at the broad end of the Vrlika plain in the rocky area surrounding the spring of the Cetina river, on the Sinj-Knin road.

It has a medieval citadel. The bust of the famous Croatian novelist Milan Begovic, who was born here, is erected here in his honor. The land of this area is thin and unfertile, but the area is even more famous for its rich and beautiful folk costume and for the most exquisite monument of Croatian architecture, the ruins of the 10th century church of St. Spas.

The region has a rich folklore, including the specific Vrlika folk dance in which the participants dance with no musical accompaniment. This is considered one of the best folk dances of Croatia. Vrlika's needle-work, bags, folk costumes, caps, rugs and other products are appreciated in all of Croatia. The folk-tunes of Vrlika served as an inspiration for the composer Jakov Gotovac in writ-ting of his opera "Eros onoga svijeta" (Ero From the Other World).

The place is mentioned as a parish in 1185. The church of The Lady of Mozalija was built in 1868. The spring of Cetina is near to the 15th century Franciscan monastery. An institution for retarded children and several businesses are located in Vrlika.

A vegetable reservation is established in the area of the spring of Cetina. This is where the traditional "Vrlicki Dernek" (Vriika Fair) takes place every year on the 26th and 27th of July. Serbianchetniks have plundered, burned and destroyed this area in 1991, forcing the surviving Croats to flee. The place is now being rebuilt and modernized.
