Sipan Travel Guide



the nicest bar on the Adriatic



Sipan is an island and a settlement with a population of 280 situated 17 km. North - West from Dubrovnik. This is the island with thickest forests in the Adriatic. It is separated from the mainland by the Kolocep channel. It has been inhibited since the ancient times. It was first mentioned in the year 1371. Lovely beaches and the sea which is rich with fish aided this town in becoming a large tourist centre.

The island has numerous cultural and historic monuments as well as 30vchurches. Between the settlements Sipan-ska Luka and Sucuradja there are the ruins of the former summer residence of the archbishops of Dubrovnik in which Ludvigo Baccadalli, a friend of Michelangelo, use to spend his summers. The Rector's Palace and the ruins of the castle of the French sovereign Renee.

The best known settlement on the island is Sipanska Luka with a population of 300. The parish church holds a number of valuable paintings. Sudjurad is famous for the fortified castle Skocibuka, fortified in the year 1577 against pirate attacks. The other settlements on the island are Frajga, Sutilija, Odak and Vojino Selo which has several shops and inns.
