Port Renfrew Travel Guide

Port Renfrew is a town on Vancouver Island about two hours drive from Victoria, a community dependent on forestry, fishing, and tourism. In the latter, Port Renfrew has made a name for itself for its salmon and halibut fishing habitats and as a great destination for kayaking and bird-watching.

The main draw of Port Renfrew is its location at the western terminus of the Juan de Fuca Trail. This is a rugged 47 kilometer backpacking trail at the heart of the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park; it ends at Botanical Beach, which is a recreational forest and beach park, full of wildlife – both mammals like cougar, bears, and deer and fish species like urchins, mussels, otters, seals, and sea lions. The forest is a popular camping, picnicking, and hiking area while the beach is great for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, surfing, windsurfing, and scuba diving.

Port Renfrew also touches the southern end of the West Coast Trail, which is the third section of the Pacific Rim National Park on the west coast of Vancouver Island. This trail was created at the turn of the 20th century to aid shipwrecked sailors back to civilization. Today, it rewards serious hikers and campers with some breathtaking scenery of beaches, lakes, streams, and rainforests.
