Lviv Travel Guide

Palace in Lviv

This center of western Ukraine has had many masters in its long history, as its different names testify. The Russian name for the city is Lvov, while the Polish name is Lwow (City of Lions), and the German name is Lemberg. Lviv has the architecture and atmosphere of a Central European city. It was never under Russian control until 1939, when the Soviet army invaded Poland from the east, following the German invasion from the west.

In 1941 Lviv was again taken by Germans, and almost half a million people subsequently died in its Jewish ghetto and nearby concentration camps. In 1944 the Red Army arrived in Lviv; until 1991 it was a Soviet city. Today, Lviv is an important manufacturing center (textiles, chemicals, machinery, and processed foods).
