Lajes das Flores Travel Guide

Lajes das Flores is the second largest villa in the island of Flores in the Azores and has a population of about 1,500. It is located in the southeastern coast of Flores, which is an island in the western part of the Azores. Because there is no airport in Lajes, the only way to get to the village is by ferrying from one of the other Azores islands or by flying into Santa Cruz das Flores, which has the only airport in Flores, and then making the commute down south. You’ll find that Lajes is an idyllic village surrounded by the natural beauty of green fields, colorful wild flowers, old architecture, and a deep blue coastal sea – an overall great place to relax and enjoy nature.

History
Lajes das Flores is said to be the first area of Flores that was settled. It is certainly the first parish of Flores and its patron saint is Nossa Senhora do Rosario. Today, the people of Lajes are mainly farmers, livestock raisers, and fishermen. Whale hunting is no longer engaged in as an economic industry like it was in the 19th century.

Attractions
Lajes has a few interesting old-style architectural buildings worth checking out, including the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church (Our Lady of the Rosary Church). This building was built in the 18th century and features a high altar, fine carved wood finishes, and quality interior artistry. The Nossa Senhora das Angústias (Our Lady of Concerns) Chapel is also notable; it was built by Spanish noblemen who wanted to dedicate the church to God whom they believed saved them from drowning after their ship at sea had sunk.

For swimming, boating, scuba diving, surfing, and sailing, the Ponta das Lajes is a great beach area near the village. The two southern lakes of the famous seven lakes of Flores, the Caldeira Rasa and the Caldeira Funda, are also located near Lajes. Natural forest reserves enclose both caldeiras and showcase some interesting flora, fauna, and landscapes.

The small town of Lomba is also within driving distance of Lajes. The village offers some interesting Azorean religious architecture, including churches which house some well preserved artifacts.

Festivals
Lajes also plays hosts to a few festivals every year, including the Emigrant Festival in the middle of July, which is a popular music and cultural celebration. The Holy Ghost Festival also takes place in Lajes as it does in the other villages in Flores.
