Pakistan's largest city is Karachi, which dates to the early 1700s, when a fort was built there to protect the sea trade that was attracted by the excellent harbor. The harbor makes Karachi practically the only outlet to the sea for Pakistan and for neighboring Afghanistan. Since 1947, the city's population has increased enormously. Karachi has grown into a large industrial center, producing textiles and a great variety of consumer goods. The city served as Pakistan's capital from 1947 to 1959.
