Hameau-Versailles
Across from the small lake a half-mile away from the Petit Trianon in Versailles is the Hameau built by Marie Antoinette – a mock Normandy village where she played out her fantasy, pretending to be a shepherdess tending her flock. She also built the Théâtre de la Reine nearby where she put on theatricals to entertain her family. She would often pretend to be a maid in comedies. Between the Hameau and the Théâtre, historians believe Marie Antoinette really lost her mind, struck by depression and longing for a simpler life. |
