Cape Spear Travel Guide

Cape Spear historic site on the Avalon Peninsula[1] only a short drive from downtown St. John’s.[2] It is Canada’s easternmost point, and controversially holds the title as North America’s easternmost point.[3] The site has been designated a Canadian National Historic site and is called the Cape Spear National Historic Park.[4]

Cape Spear is a good place to whale-watch and spot ethereal, odd-shaped icebergs drifting by amid a wooden lighthouse towering two stories high. This happens to be the continent’s oldest surviving lighthouse and was erected in 1835. During WWII, the lighthouse had two gun emplacements installed to help defend the city against submarine attacks from the Nazis.[5]
