Bukhara. This 1,000-year-old city is the most Asian of Uzbekistan, much less glamorous than Samarkand and much more traditional than Tashkent. From the 16th until the late 19th century, Bukhara was a center of religious learning; it had about 100 madrassas. Its streets are still lined with old bazaars and mosques. Bukhara, a famous type of Oriental rug with geometrical designs and reddish colors, is named after the city.
