Bilaj Travel Guide

Bilaj is a village with 330 inhabitants (582 meters above sea level), 6 kilometers to the south-west of Gospic where there are the ruins of the town Bilaj from the Middle Ages. In the period from 1528-1689 it was an important fortified system for fighting against the Turks.

In the surrounding area the remnants from the Bronze and Iron Age were found. In 1809 there was heavy fighting against the Turks. A monument was erected in Gospic for all the heroes who had been killed in that fight - it was the work of Fran-ges. The parochial church of St. Joseph was built in 1848.
