Côte amalfitaine
This coast, cliff-hung, convoluted, stretches from Positano to Salerno, and possesses some of the most spectacular scenery in Italy. The Amalfi Drive faithfully follows its length, keeping at a respectful distance above the waves while dutifully following each frightening twist of the shoreline. Bright houses cling to the slopes, surrounded by gardens that descend in steps to the sea. Its pleasant climate, breathtaking views and picturesque gorges have made it a favorite haunt of artists and honeymooners.
Amalfi was a major trading center in Byzantine times and is now a major tourist center. From the main piazza, with its naughty fountain, a flight of steps ascends to the 11th Century bronze door of Amalfi's Duomo. Here, in the crypt, lies the body of Saint Andrew the Apostle, delivered from Constantinople in 1208. On either side of the main altar are interesting ambones (pulpits) with fine mosaics.
